Built between 1597 and 1611 for Sir George Bruce, the palace is a unique restoration of a merchant’s town house. Although never a royal residence, King James VI visited in 1617. The tearoom is housed in Bessie Bar’s malthouse, who is thought to be a niece of Sir George. The Palace has splendid kitchen gardens, featuring plants known to have been grown in the 17th century.
